Remain is a supernatural romantic thriller written, directed and produced by M. Night Shyamalan, from a story he developed with novelist Nicholas Sparks. Jake Gyllenhaal stars as Tate Gordon, a reclusive architect who moves to a small coastal town and is pulled into a deadly mystery after meeting a young woman played by Phoebe Dynevor. Warner Bros. Pictures will release it in the United States on February 5, 2027, with some international markets opening from February 3. The film already had a surprise world premiere at Beyond Fest in Los Angeles on September 29, 2026, so a few audiences have seen it. For everyone else, this page covers what has been officially confirmed and keeps any M. Night Shyamalan Remain twist ending out of it.

Premise and what we know
The official synopsis is short. Tate Gordon, a reclusive architect, moves to a small coastal town to complete his latest project. There he meets an alluring young woman, Wren, and is drawn into a deadly mystery. Warner Bros. bills the film as a supernatural romance, and that pairing of genres explains why Shyamalan brought in Sparks, the author of The Notebook and A Walk to Remember.
Shyamalan’s films are known for late reveals, so it is fair to ask whether Remain has one. The studio has not said, and this page does not report anything from the festival screening as fact. If there is a twist, it will be covered in a clearly marked spoiler section after the February release, alongside a Remain 2027 review roundup.
Production and development
Shyamalan and Sparks developed the story together, and the arrangement ran in two directions. Shyamalan wrote and directed the film, while Sparks wrote a novel version of the story, published in October 2025. That makes Remain one of the rare cases where a book and its film were built from the same original idea at the same time, rather than one adapting the other.
Shyamalan produced through his company, Blinding Edge Pictures, and the film is his latest with Warner Bros. after Trap (2024). Filming took place in Rhode Island, starting on June 18, 2025, with an end date set for August 8. Cinematographer Adolpho Veloso (Train Dreams) shot it on 35mm VistaVision film. James Newton Howard composed the score, his ninth collaboration with Shyamalan, a partnership that goes back to The Sixth Sense (1999).
Shyamalan also appears on screen, as he does in most of his films. He plays a character named Nash.

What to expect
Remain sits closer to Shyamalan’s quieter, melancholy work than to his creature films. The coastal setting, an isolated protagonist and a love story with a supernatural element suggest something in the vein of The Sixth Sense or Lady in the Water rather than Signs, though the studio has not drawn those comparisons itself. Gyllenhaal brings experience with ambiguous psychological roles, from Donnie Darko to Nightcrawler. Dynevor arrives fresh from another genre project, Mark Heyman’s Pendulum, which opens just a month earlier.
The VistaVision format is worth noting. It is a large-negative film process associated with widescreen spectacle, and it is unusual to see it used on an intimate romance-thriller. Expect a film designed to look strikingly big on a cinema screen.
Release and status
Warner Bros. originally scheduled Remain for October 23, 2026, before moving it to February 5, 2027. Because of the move, the Beyond Fest screening on September 29, 2026, came months ahead of the theatrical run. Some databases list Remain as a 2026 film because of that premiere date. This wiki uses 2027, the year of its theatrical release. Rating and runtime had not been officially confirmed as of October 10, 2026.
