Who’s getting possessed? Scarlett Johansson stars as Julie Miller, an NYPD homicide detective and single mother — and she’s not up against some random evil. Thirteen years after she took down the satanic serial killer known as Father Sunday (John Leguizamo), a new string of murders pulls her back into the nightmare. This time, the demonic force has its sights set on her 12-year-old son. Chiwetel Ejiofor co-stars as Father William, the priest standing with her in the trenches.
Now let’s address the elephant in the confessional: this is NOT a continuation of The Exorcist: Believer (2023). Flanagan is rebooting the entire franchise from scratch — a clean slate for the scariest name in horror, from one of the genre’s best modern storytellers. And the ensemble? Diane Lane, Laurence Fishburne, Sasha Calle, and Jacobi Jupe round out the cast, with Flanagan’s usual suspects (Carla Gugino! Kate Siegel! Rahul Kohli! Hamish Linklater!) along for the ride. Stacked doesn’t begin to cover it.
