Evil Dead Wrath is an upcoming American supernatural horror film written and directed by Francis Galluppi and produced by Rob Tapert and series creator Sam Raimi. It is the seventh film in the Evil Dead series and a prequel set in 1972, nine years before the events of The Evil Dead (1981). Charlotte Hope, Jessica McNamee and Zach Gilford lead the cast. New Line Cinema will release it in the United States through Warner Bros. Pictures on April 7, 2028. Some early listings and searches still say Evil Dead Wrath 2027, but the confirmed date is in 2028.

Premise and what we know
The plot has not been officially revealed. The one firm story detail comes from Tapert, who told Dread Central in June 2026 that the film “predates everything. It takes place in 1972.” He called it “yet another great departure” for the series. That places it before Ash Williams and his friends drive to the cabin in Raimi’s original film.
No character names have been announced, and the studio has not said whether the Necronomicon (the Book of the Dead) and the Deadites will be tied to the original cabin, or whether familiar elements of the series’ mythology return. Any detailed synopsis circulating online should be treated as unconfirmed until New Line releases one.
Production and development
A new Evil Dead film was announced in April 2024 with Galluppi attached to write and direct. Raimi hired him after seeing his first feature, the crime thriller The Last Stop in Yuma County (2023). The Francis Galluppi Evil Dead project is produced by Raimi and Tapert through Ghost House Pictures. Executive producers are Bruce Campbell, Evil Dead Rise director Lee Cronin, Romel Adam and Jose Cañas.
By January 2026 the cast was in place, and New Line Cinema and Sony Pictures were co-financing. Production took place in Auckland, New Zealand, where earlier entries were also filmed. The title Evil Dead Wrath was announced on February 21, 2026, once filming was underway, and production wrapped on May 30, 2026. The 2028 release date was announced at CinemaCon in April 2026.

What to expect
The modern Evil Dead films treat the franchise as an anthology linked by the Book of the Dead rather than a single story. Fede Ãlvarez’s Evil Dead (2013) moved the horror to a new cabin, and Cronin’s Rise took it to a Los Angeles apartment block. Galluppi’s 1972 setting continues that approach while stepping back in time. Wrath follows another standalone entry, Sébastien VaniÄek’s Evil Dead Burn (2026). Galluppi’s debut was a tense, single-location film. That fits a series that has always worked best when its characters are trapped.
