Art the Clown

Art the Clown from Terrifier

Art the Clown is the silent, black-and-white killer clown of Damien Leone’s Terrifier films and the most successful new slasher villain in years. He never speaks, but he mugs, mimes and laughs his way through some of the most extreme horror ever to reach multiplexes. What began as a background character in a 2008 short film has become a box-office phenomenon: Terrifier 3 (2024) is the highest-grossing unrated film of all time. Fair warning to newcomers: these films are famously graphic, so this page sticks to the story and the craft rather than the gore.

Origin story and backstory

Leone’s idea started with an image: a woman riding the city bus home from work when a clown gets on, sits across from her and starts taunting her. He put a clown into his first short, The 9th Circle (2008), as little more than background, alongside witches, demons and other monsters. Viewers kept asking about the clown, so Art got a bigger role in Leone’s next short, Terrifier (2011), in which he stalks a woman who witnesses one of his murders at a gas station. Both shorts were folded into the 2013 anthology All Hallows’ Eve as segments on a mysterious VHS tape.

Leone then built a feature around Art because he felt the 2010s lacked an iconic horror villain, especially an original clown. He designed Art as the opposite of Pennywise: bald, mute, armed and dressed in colorless makeup and clothes. Unlike the silent slashers he is often compared with, Art is wildly expressive.

A clown with no past (so far)

Art’s history is deliberately unexplained. Terrifier (2016) presents him as a killer stalking Halloween night in fictional Miles County. Terrifier 2 (2022) makes him openly supernatural: he is resurrected, accompanied by a ghostly figure called the Little Pale Girl and opposed by Sienna Shaw (Lauren LaVera), a teenager whose late father drew her as an angelic warrior destined to defeat him. Leone has said he modeled their rivalry on Batman and the Joker, with biblical overtones of good and evil. Terrifier 3 (2024) moves the carnage to Christmas, with Art in a Santa suit. Leone has promised that Terrifier 4 will finally reveal Art’s backstory within its first 15 minutes.

Iconic moments

  • The pizzeria (2016): Art sits silently in a late-night pizza place, staring and grinning at two young women. The scene builds dread out of nothing but a face.
  • The hacksaw scene (2016): The sequence that made Terrifier notorious among horror fans. We’ll leave the details to the film.
  • The Clown Cafe (2022): Sienna’s nightmare plays out as a cheerful retro TV commercial with Art as host, a sharp change of tone that shows Leone’s playful side.
  • Sienna’s armor (2022): Sienna finally confronts Art in the costume her father designed, sword in hand, and the franchise gets a true hero.
  • Santa Art (2024): Terrifier 3 puts the killer in a Santa suit and sets him loose in a busy shopping mall.
  • The bus (2024): Terrifier 3 ends with Art escaping onto a bus and honking his horn at a woman reading a book titled The 9th Circle, a callback to Leone’s first short and to the image that started it all.

TV, games, comics and what’s next

TV and other media: David Howard Thornton played Art in an episode of the comedy series Bupkis (2023) and in a holiday yule-log video released on December 24, 2024. Art has appeared in Call of Duty events, in Terrifier: The ARTcade Game (2025) and as a Fortnite skin, and in a three-issue comic adaptation and novelizations of the second and third films.

Announced: Terrifier 4 is in development, with Thornton expected to return. Leone has described it as the planned conclusion and said in May 2026 that it will take place around New Year’s Eve and is aiming for a 2027 release. As of October 2026 no release date has been set, and Thornton has publicly dismissed rumors of an earlier date, saying filming had not started.

Trivia and behind-the-scenes facts

  • Thornton found the part through a casting notice for a “tall, skinny, comedic actor” with clowning experience, and won it after improvising a kill scene in his audition.
  • Leone has compared his two Arts this way: Giannelli “may as well have been a guy dressed as a clown, whereas David is a clown.”
  • Leone handles the films’ practical make-up effects himself, which is a big part of why the series looks so much more expensive than it is.
  • Terrifier 2 raised about $250,000 on Indiegogo, roughly five times its $50,000 goal, to fund an effects-heavy scene.
  • Terrifier 2 was a surprise word-of-mouth hit in October 2022 despite a small budget, little mainstream marketing and no stars. Variety called its success a “shock” to the industry.
  • There were widespread reports of viewers fainting or vomiting at Terrifier 2 screenings. Leone said he would have welcomed a few walkouts but didn’t want anyone getting hurt.
  • Terrifier 2 reached theaters on October 6, 2022, and Terrifier 3 premiered at Fantastic Fest on September 19, 2024, before opening wide on October 11.
  • Terrifier 3 opened at No. 1 in the U.S. with $18.9 million, ahead of Joker: Folie à Deux, and grossed about $90 million worldwide.
  • In France, Terrifier 3 was restricted to viewers 18 and over, the first such rating there since Saw III in 2006.
