Room 1408 Is Taking Guests Again — Natalia Dyer Leads the Sequel, and the Original Director Is Back
The front desk clerk smiles like he is doing you a favor. The elevator dings. The hallway runs too long and too quiet, and at the end of it there is a door with four numbers that add up to thirteen.
You have your key. You have your recorder. You have one hour, if the stories are true — nobody has ever lasted longer than that in room 1408.
Turn the lights down low, horror lovers, and keep one hand on the doorknob. We are checking back in.
Nineteen years after John Cusack checked into the most dangerous hotel room in Stephen King’s catalogue, 1408 is getting a sequel. Variety reports that Natalia Dyer will lead the new film, with Elijah Wood joining her in a supporting role, and original director Mikael Håfström back behind the camera. Håfström co-wrote the sequel with Mark Verheiden, and production is slated to begin in the first quarter of 2027.

The Room Reopens
Full disclosure, up front, because that’s how we do things here: nobody has seen a frame of this film. It has not been shot yet, and two pieces of the puzzle are not locked in.
John Cusack and Samuel L. Jackson are still negotiating their returns. If their deals close, expect smaller roles this time around — Cusack’s Mike Enslin, the skeptical author who made his living debunking haunted places, and Jackson’s Gerald Olin, the Dolphin Hotel manager who begged him not to take the room. The sequel belongs to Dyer’s character, who is the focal point of the new story.
Word of a follow-up first floated last month as a rumor. This week’s trade reporting is what moves it out of the rumor mill: a lead in place, a supporting player cast, the original director writing and directing, and a production window on the calendar. That is a movie assembling itself, fiends, not a wish.
Why Room 1408 Still Matters
The 2007 original is one of the great one-room pressure cookers. Cusack carried it nearly alone — a grieving skeptic locked in with a room that weaponized his own memories against him — while Jackson’s single warning scene did more with a file folder of death records than most horror films do with a monster. Olin’s count, for the record: 56 people died in room 1408, and no guest had ever lasted more than an hour inside it.
The film stands at 80% on Rotten Tomatoes and took in more than $131 million worldwide. It also left the sequel question genuinely open: the original exists in multiple versions with different endings across its theatrical and home releases, so which ending a sequel builds on is anyone’s guess. Plot details are still under wraps. (And no, we are not calling it 1409. The room’s arithmetic was never the honest kind anyway.)
Trivia & Facts
- Do the math on the door: 1 + 4 + 0 + 8 = 13. The Dolphin Hotel never stood a chance.
- In the original, hotel manager Gerald Olin warns Enslin that 56 people have died in room 1408 — and that nobody has ever spent more than one hour inside it.
- The 2007 film was released with one ending in theaters and alternate endings on home video, which is why fans still argue about how Enslin’s night really ended.
- Stephen King’s short story “1408” dates to 1999; the film adaptation arrived eight years later, in 2007.
- Before she checks into the Dolphin, Natalia Dyer faced down Hawkins as Nancy Wheeler in Stranger Things. Elijah Wood, meanwhile, is no stranger to genre work — from Frodo Baggins to The Monkey.
