Plot

In Jordan Peele’s Nope (2022), OJ Haywood and his sister Emerald inherit a horse ranch in Agua Dulce that trains animals for film and television. Their father dies when objects fall out of a clear sky. Something above the ranch is taking horses, and taking people who look at it the wrong way. OJ, who does not like the spotlight, and Em, who wants it, decide the way through is to get the shot.

A neighboring theme park, Jupiter’s Claim, run by a former child actor, has its own history with a spectacle that went wrong. The thing in the sky is not a saucer in the usual sense. Getting a picture of it is the plot. Looking at it is the risk. The film is about spectacle: who gets to film the extraordinary, and what the extraordinary does to the people who need the footage.

Production

Jordan Peele wrote and directed it as his third feature. Daniel Kaluuya plays OJ. Keke Palmer plays Emerald. Steven Yeun plays Ricky Park. The budget was about $68 million, much larger than Get Out. Universal released it on July 22, 2022. It grossed about $170 million worldwide. Peele shot on film, including IMAX cameras, which fits a movie about the image.

The creature design was kept back in the marketing. Michael Abels scored it, as he did Us. The Haywoods are written as descendants of the Black jockey in Eadweard Muybridge’s early motion studies, a claim the film makes and historians have complicated. Peele has said the film is about the cost of a perfect shot. It is not a sequel to Get Out or Us.

  • Jupe’s sitcom past includes a chimpanzee attack the film shows in pieces.
  • Peele shot parts of it in IMAX. The sky is the set.
  • The title is the line you say when you should not look.
