Overview

Ridley Scott directed Alien (1979), the film that put a crew of space truckers in a ship with something that did not belong there. He did not direct Aliens, Alien 3, or Alien Resurrection. He came back to the series as a producer and then as director of Prometheus (2012) and Alien: Covenant (2017), which ask where the creature came from. The rest of the career is not horror: Blade Runner, Thelma & Louise, Gladiator, Black Hawk Down, The Martian. Horror is the corner of it that this site covers.

Career

Scott came out of advertising and the BBC. The Duellists (1977) was the first feature. Alien was the second, written by Dan O’Bannon from a story with Ronald Shusett, designed in part by H. R. Giger. Scott’s contribution was the look: a ship that feels used, a company that does not tell the crew the truth, and a creature shown in pieces. Sigourney Weaver’s Ripley was not written as the sole survivor in every draft. The film made her one.

James Cameron directed Aliens (1986) as a war film. David Fincher, then Jean-Pierre Jeunet, took the next two. Scott’s return with Prometheus shifted the series toward engineers and origin myths. Covenant continued that and brought the Xenomorph back on screen. Alien: Romulus (2024), directed by Fede Álvarez, is a Scott production, not a Scott film. He has talked for years about further Alien stories. The ones he directed remain Alien, Prometheus, and Covenant.

Blade Runner (1982) sits next to Alien in the reputation even though it is not a horror film. Both are about companies, bodies, and things that look human until they do not. Gladiator (2000) won the best picture Oscar and reset his standing in Hollywood after a rough 1990s. His brother Tony Scott, who died in 2012, was a director in his own right. Their production company, Scott Free, is on a long list of films Ridley did not direct.
