Overview

Vera Farmiga was born on August 6, 1973, in Clifton, New Jersey, the second of seven children of Ukrainian parents. She grew up in a close-knit Ukrainian-American community in Irvington, spoke Ukrainian as her first language and did not learn English until she started kindergarten at six. As a teenager she toured with a Ukrainian folk-dance ensemble, and she is also a classically trained pianist. She found acting almost by accident in high school, winning the lead in a school production of The Vampire, and went on to study theatre at Syracuse University, graduating in 1995.

After stage work, including a Broadway debut as an understudy in 1996, she was a regular on the fantasy series Roar (1997) alongside Heath Ledger and made her film debut in Return to Paradise (1998). Her breakthrough came as a drug-addicted mother in Down to the Bone (2004), which won her the Los Angeles Film Critics Association Award for Best Actress. Major studio roles followed in The Manchurian Candidate (2004), Martin Scorsese’s The Departed (2006) and The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas (2008). Her performance as a frequent flyer opposite George Clooney in Up in the Air (2009) earned Oscar, Golden Globe, BAFTA and Screen Actors Guild nominations, and Roger Ebert called her “one of the warmest and most attractive women in the movies, or at least she plays one.” In 2011 she made her directing debut with Higher Ground, in which she also starred.

Horror Roles and Notable Performances

Farmiga first built her reputation as a scream queen with two psychological thrillers released two years apart. In the psychological thriller Joshua (2007) she played Abby Cairn, opposite Sam Rockwell, and in Jaume Collet-Serra’s Orphan (2009) she took the lead role of Kate Coleman. The film was co-produced by Leonardo DiCaprio, her co-star in The Departed, and The Times wrote that she “becomes more convincing as the story unfolds.”

Her defining horror role came in James Wan’s The Conjuring (2013), playing paranormal investigator and clairvoyant Lorraine Warren alongside Patrick Wilson as her husband, Ed. The Hollywood Reporter wrote that “Farmiga resonates an extraordinary sensitivity” in the role, and Variety praised the “rock-solid rapport” between the two leads. She returned as Lorraine in The Conjuring 2 (2016), Annabelle Comes Home (2019), The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It (2021) and The Conjuring: Last Rites (2025), and made a cameo in a mid-credits scene of The Nun II (2023). On television, from 2013 to 2017 she played Norma Louise Bates, mother of Norman Bates, in the cable drama Bates Motel, a contemporary prequel-style reboot of Hitchcock’s Psycho. She also served as a producer and later executive producer on the series through its fifth and final season in 2017, and she earned three Critics’ Choice Television Award nominations for the role. The role won her the 2013 Saturn Award for Best Actress on Television and a Primetime Emmy nomination, and critics singled her out as the main reason the show worked.

Reception and Legacy

Farmiga has been widely praised for bringing warmth and emotional weight to horror material. Over more than a decade, her Lorraine Warren became the emotional anchor of one of the most successful horror franchises ever made; The Conjuring became the second highest-grossing horror film of all time up to that date. Beyond horror, she received a second Emmy nomination for the Netflix miniseries When They See Us (2019) and appeared in Godzilla: King of the Monsters (2019), Hawkeye (2021) and The Many Saints of Newark (2021). Leonard Maltin called her “one of the most gifted and daring actresses of our time.”
