You’ve checked the locks twice and the flashlight still works — old habits from old nightmares. The poster on your wall is twenty years of wanting to believe. Tonight your phone buzzes with a headline you don’t dare read. Because some truths have been out there a long time.
And now one of them is officially coming back.
Lights low, volume up, phone face-down, fiends.
Hulu has handed a full series order to Ryan Coogler’s reimagining of The X-Files, Deadline reported on October 13, 2026.
Quick Specs
- Full series order at Hulu; pilot written and directed by Ryan Coogler
- Showrunner: Jennifer Yale (Outlander, See)
- Leads: Danielle Deadwyler and Himesh Patel — new FBI agents, not Mulder and Scully
- Chris Carter executive produces (non-writing)
- Premiere date: none announced
The pilot was picked up around February — roughly eight months before the series order — so Hulu liked what it saw early.
Coogler, fresh off Sinners, executive produces alongside Yale. Proximity Media, Onyx Collective, and 20th Television back the series.
No returning original-series cast has been announced. Coogler has spoken with Gillian Anderson, but nothing is confirmed — temper those Scully dreams for now.
The new bench runs deep: Amy Madigan, Steve Buscemi, Ben Foster, Devery Jacobs, Lochlyn Munro, Tantoo Cardinal, Joel D. Montgrand, and Sofia Grace Clifton. Ludwig Göransson scored the pilot — of course.
File this one under X for “eXcited” — a thirty-year-old mythology with fresh agents instead of a victory lap is the right kind of resurrection.
Full disclosure, up front — this is an announcement, not a review. No footage, no premiere date, no episodes to judge yet.
Trivia & Facts
- The original series ran 1993–2002 across nine seasons, two feature films, and a two-season revival in 2016.
- Carter first floated this reboot on a 2023 podcast — it’s been brewing for years.
- The leads play new agents in a long-shuttered division, not recast Mulder and Scully.
Harper’s Extras
- The IT Hub: Every Pennywise Nightmare in One Crypt — reimaginings can rule.
- Jason Voorhees’ Dad Finally Has a Face — Crystal Lake’s Elias Reveal Is Franchise History — history in the making.
- Sinners (2025) — Coogler’s horror homework first.
