Who He Is
Alexandre Aja was born Alexandre Jouan-Arcady in Paris, the son of director Alexandre Arcady and journalist and film critic Marie-Jo Jouan. He grew up on his father’s sets and acted as a child in Le Grand Carnaval and both Le Grand Pardon films. At school he met Gregory Levasseur, and the two bonded over a shared love of gory horror. Levasseur has co-written his films and designed their worlds ever since. That partnership is the spine of Aja’s career.
The Work, and What He Did in It
At 18 he and Levasseur co-directed a short, Over the Rainbow (1997), which was selected in competition at Cannes. His first feature, Furia (1999), was adapted from Julio Cortazar’s short story “Graffiti.” He also learned the trade inside the family business, writing and working as second assistant director on his father’s Entre chiens et loups (2002).
High Tension (2003): Aja and Levasseur first drafted Haute Tension in 1998 and 1999, explicitly as a tribute piece. Aja chose practical makeup effects over CGI for its gore. It won Best Director and Best Fantasy Film at Sitges. On the record, Aja has said he had read Dean Koontz’s novel Intensity and that the film’s beginning was “quite similar,” calling it a tribute. In the U.S., Lionsgate first planned an NC-17 release and then went for an R. Aja said the trims added up to less than a minute: “shots, not scenes.” In 2004, Variety named him one of its Ten Directors to Watch.
The Hills Have Eyes (2006): Wes Craven saw High Tension and personally asked Aja to develop the remake of his own film. The remake made about $70 million worldwide. Aja passed on the sequel because he was busy making Mirrors (2008), a remake of the Korean film Into the Mirror, starring Kiefer Sutherland.
By then he had a label. Critic Alan Jones coined the “Splat Pack” for the 2000s wave of hard-R horror directors: Darren Lynn Bousman, Neil Marshall, Greg McLean, Eli Roth, James Wan, Leigh Whannell, Rob Zombie and Aja. At home he is linked with the New French Extremity.
He went on to adapt two novels. Horns (2013) starred Daniel Radcliffe and came from Joe Hill’s book, and The 9th Life of Louis Drax (2016) came from Liz Jensen’s. Meanwhile he wrote and produced for his own circle. Franck Khalfoun directed P2 (2007), Maniac (2012) with Elijah Wood, and Night of the Hunted (2023). Levasseur made his directing debut on The Pyramid (2014), and Johannes Roberts directed The Other Side of the Door (2016). On 47 Meters Down (2017) Aja was an executive producer only.
Crawl (2019): produced by Sam Raimi, Craig Forbes and Aja for Paramount and Ghost House. It is a creature feature set in a single house during a hurricane. Michael and Shawn Rasmussen wrote the spec script, and Aja rewrote and expanded it. It was shot in Belgrade, Serbia, in 41 days in August and September 2018, on warehouse stages at the city’s port. The production built three soundstages and seven flood tanks, the largest 60 by 80 meters, with water rising to two meters. One boat shot pushed 20 tons of pressure against the set. Cast and crew spent about 40 days working roughly 12-hour days in the water, with some 50 crew members in wetsuits. Paramount skipped critics’ screenings. The film made $91 million on a budget of about $13.5 to 15 million, and a sequel was greenlit in August 2024.
Oxygen (2021): a French-language thriller for Netflix in which Melanie Laurent carries almost the whole film alone inside a cryogenic pod. Never Let Go (2024) starred Halle Berry. It was announced in 2022 under the title Mother Land.
Cool Verified Facts
- He had a short film in competition at Cannes at 18.
- Wes Craven picked him to remake one of Craven’s own films after seeing High Tension.
- In 2025 the Strasbourg festival made him Guest of Honour, with an honorary award, a retrospective and a master class. It lists a Baudelaire project, Les Fleurs du mal, as in progress.
Signatures, Habits and Behind the Scenes
- The partnership. He and Levasseur went from horror-obsessed teenagers to a Cannes short at 18, and they have worked together on everything since, through Crawl.
- Practical over digital. The High Tension gore was makeup effects by choice, and the Crawl flood was real water in real tanks. His extremity happens physically, on set.
- A small repertory company. He produces for Khalfoun, Levasseur and Roberts, much the way he first got into the business on his father’s sets.
- He wears his influences openly. He called High Tension a tribute, and he admitted the Koontz echo himself.
Why He Matters
Aja carried French horror’s extremity into the American mainstream. High Tension proved a French-language slasher could be a global calling card, and within three years he was remaking Wes Craven for a Hollywood studio as one of the Splat Pack’s defining directors. Crawl is a model mid-budget creature feature: one house, one hurricane, real water, no critics’ screenings and $91 million at the box office. His range keeps him working. He has made a slasher, remakes, literary adaptations, single-location science fiction and a creature feature, and the intensity has stayed even as the genres kept changing.
