Toho and GKIDS dropped the news on October 6, and they didn’t come empty-handed: a brand-new IMAX poster, a second trailer that stomped out of New York Comic Con, and — because this franchise understands its people — collectible popcorn buckets, including one you eat out of Godzilla’s back. Cinema.
Here’s why the IMAX part matters: Minus Zero is the first Japanese production ever Filmed for IMAX. Shot entirely in Japan on IMAX-certified cameras, with sound and imagery optimized for the format. If any movie deserves the biggest, loudest screen you can find, it’s the one where a radioactive lizard flattens Tokyo.
The new trailer teases the big bad: King Ghidorah, throwing gravity beams all over the sky. Toho’s still hiding the full Ghidorah redesign — they’re saving that for the theater, you lucky devils. The story picks up in 1949, two years after Minus One, with the Shikishima family facing the end of everything. “There is no third time. Everything ends here.” Chills.
The film already premiered as the Spotlight Gala at the New York Film Festival on September 26 to roaring reviews — 97% on Rotten Tomatoes and counting — and it hits the BFI London Film Festival on October 14. The hype is real. So are the tickets.
Harper’s take: Minus One was the rare blockbuster with a beating human heart. If Yamazaki bottles that lightning twice — with Ghidorah in the mix — clear your November. And with horror having a record $1.28B year at the box office, the King picked the perfect moment to stomp back.
Godzilla Day (November 3) marks the anniversary of the 1954 original. See it early, see it loud, see it in IMAX.
Sleep tight. The King is coming.
