Premise and what we know
Warner Bros. has confirmed only the broad outline. The film follows the Warrens’ investigations in their early years, with younger actors in the lead roles. The title suggests a Catholic rite of passage, a natural fit for a series rooted in the couple’s faith, but the studio has not said which case is at the center of the story or where and when it is set.
Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga played the Warrens across the four main films, ending with Last Rites. Whether they appear in First Communion, even briefly, has not been confirmed. In August 2025, Madison Lawlor and Orion Smith, who played the young Lorraine and Ed in Last Rites, said they were interested in more prequel stories. The studio has since cast Fix and Wareing.
Production and development
A Conjuring prequel movie was announced in September 2025, soon after Last Rites became the highest-grossing film in the series. Huart, a director whose short film work brought him to the studio’s attention, entered talks to direct. Naing and Goldberg co-wrote Last Rites. In January 2026, Warner Bros. announced the title and the September 10, 2027 release date.
Peter Safran, a producer on every main Conjuring film, produces. John Rickard, Natalia Safran and Romel Adam are executive producers. In July 2026, TheWrap reported the casting of Wareing and Fix as the young Warrens, alongside Matthias Schweighöfer, Charles Parnell, Marta Kessler and Caleb Dolden. James Wan, who directed the first two films and produced the series through Atomic Monster, had not been announced as a producer on First Communion as of October 2026.

What to expect
The Conjuring Universe has visited the past before. The Annabelle films and the Nun films are set before or around the Warrens’ early cases. First Communion is different because it puts the Warrens themselves at the center as young investigators. Expect the series’ familiar ingredients: a real-world-inspired haunting, Catholic ritual, Lorraine’s clairvoyance and Ed’s demonology. The real Warrens’ casework began in the 1950s, so a story set decades before The Conjuring (2013) is likely, though the film’s exact period has not been confirmed.
Release and status
Warner Bros. has dated the film for September 10, 2027. That is close to the early-September slot where Last Rites opened in 2025. No trailer, rating or runtime had been released as of October 10, 2026.
