Overview
Tobin Bell plays John Kramer, the man the Saw films call Jigsaw. He is on screen for only a few minutes of the 2004 original, mostly as a body on a bathroom floor, and the performance is still the one the sequels are built around. The voice on the tapes, the slow speech, and the rule that the traps are meant as tests all come from him. He was in his sixties when the series started. The character is older than the slashers he was sold next to, and that is the point.
Career
Bell worked for years before Saw in small parts: Mississippi Burning, The Firm, a run of television. James Wan and Leigh Whannell cast him because they wanted a dying man, not a monster in a mask. Kramer has terminal cancer. The games are his answer to that. Bell has said he wrote a backstory for himself before the sequels supplied one. The later films catch up to that work.
He is in Saw, Saw II, Saw III, Saw IV, Saw V, Saw VI, Saw 3D, Jigsaw, and Saw X. Spiral (2021) uses the brand without centering him. Saw III kills Kramer on screen. The films after that use flashbacks, recordings, and apprentices so the actor can stay in a series whose villain is dead. Saw X (2023) is set between the first film and Saw II, which is why he is the lead again. Amanda Young, played by Shawnee Smith, is the apprentice the story keeps returning to.
Outside the series he has kept working in television and smaller films. The public name is still Jigsaw. He has been nominated for the horror-award circuit more often than for the mainstream one, and he treats the role as a character part rather than a stunt.

Trivia
- The bathroom body in the first film is Bell. The twist depends on the audience assuming the corpse is set dressing.
- He has said the whisper in the voice was a choice, not a director’s note he fought.
- Billy the Puppet is not him. The voice on many of the tapes is.
- Kramer dies in Saw III. Later films keep Bell by moving backward or using recordings.
- Saw X is the first time since the early sequels that the plot needs him alive for the whole film.
