Overview

Courteney Cox plays Gale Weathers, the reporter who writes the book on Sidney Prescott and then has to survive her own coverage. She is in every Scream film from the 1996 original through Scream VI, and she returned for Scream 7. Friends made her a bigger star than the horror series did. Gale is the role that keeps her in this wiki.

Career

Cox came up through commercials and a Bruce Springsteen video before Friends started in 1994. Scream was shot while that show was becoming a hit. Wes Craven cast her as the ambitious journalist who is wrong about the murders and right about the story. The sequels pair her with David Arquette’s Dewey, on screen and for a while off it. They married and later divorced. The films kept the characters together longer than the marriage.

Gale is stabbed, shot, and written off more than once. She is still in Scream VI, which Sidney sat out, reporting from New York. The performance starts as a caricature of tabloid television and becomes the person who knows the rules because she has published them. Outside the series, Cox directed and produced as well as acted. Monica Geller remains the role most people name first.

Scream credits

Trivia

  • She is one of the only leads in every theatrical Scream film through VI.
  • Gale’s book is the plot device that makes the killings public. The films keep quoting it.
  • She and David Arquette married in 1999 and divorced in 2013. Dewey and Gale do not follow that timeline cleanly.
  • Friends was already on the air when Scream opened. The horror role did not replace the sitcom one.
  • There is no Gale Weathers character page yet.
