Overview
Scream is a slasher about people who have seen slashers. Wes Craven directed the 1996 film from Kevin Williamson’s script. Sidney Prescott, played by Neve Campbell, is the target. Gale Weathers, played by Courteney Cox, writes the book. Ghostface is not one person. Each film puts someone new in the mask and gives them a motive tied to the last movie. That is the rule the series actually keeps.
The films
Scream 2 moves to college. Scream 3 moves to Hollywood and a stab at the film-within-the-film. Scream 4 brings Sidney home. Craven died in 2015. The 2022 film, often styled Scream, is a legacy sequel directed by Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett. Scream VI moves the younger cast to New York and goes ahead without Campbell. Scream 7 brings her back. The mask is the same Edvard Munch-derived design from the first film. The voice on the phone was Roger L. Jackson, not the actor in the costume.
