You’ve met Pennywise in a gutter, in a sewer, and in the deadlights behind a paper boat. Three decades of greasepaint and grins — you think you know exactly what he looks like when he’s hungry.

You don’t. Not this time.

Turn off the lights, fiends, because Derry is going all the way back to 1935 — and the clown’s showing up with a face you’ve never seen.

The news broke while Kane was on press duty for his other horror prequel — Peacock’s Crystal Lake, which just dropped all eight episodes. Talking to Deadline, Kane called season 2 “bigger” than the first and dropped the Pennywise bomb: Skarsgård plays “a different kind of Pennywise, Pennywise the way you’ve never seen that character before.”

So what’s a 1935 Pennywise look like? Kane’s pitch is pure pulp poetry: “It’s a Warner Bros. gangster movie. It’s bank robbers and Hoovervilles and street urchins riding the rails, religious fundamentalism.” The clown’s going Depression-era — and no, not the emotional kind. Well… it’s Derry. Probably both.

Full disclosure, up front, because that’s how we do things here: I haven’t seen a frame of season 2. Nobody has — it’s still in the writers’ room. Everything here is Kane talking to Deadline, seconded by Bloody Disgusting and Dark Horizons. But the shape of it is thrilling: IT feeds every 27 years, so the show is walking the cycles backward — 1962, then 1935, then a season 3 built around the already-teased Kitchener Iron Works explosion. (A hundred kids at an Easter egg hunt. Cheerful!)

Trivia & Facts

  • Muschietti hid the entire three-season plan inside season 1’s opening credits — the Black Spot Massacre, the Bradley Gang Massacre, and the Kitchener Iron Works explosion, all sitting there in plain sight.
  • The season 1 finale pulled 6.5 million U.S. viewers in its first three days — a series high, per Deadline. The August renewal wasn’t charity; it was arithmetic.
  • Same showrunner, two nightmares: Kane created both Derry’s second season and Crystal Lake. If you liked his Pamela Voorhees, imagine what he does with Pennywise.

Where to Watch

Season 1 of IT: Welcome to Derry is streaming now on HBO/Max. Season 2 has no premiere date — outlets are guessing late 2027 or early 2028, but that’s their math, not HBO’s.

FAQ

Is Bill Skarsgård really back? Kane won’t say it outright — but you don’t promise a Pennywise “you’ve never seen” unless the clown’s in the room.

What’s the Bradley Gang Massacre? A dark slice of Derry history from King’s 1986 novel, now getting the full Kane treatment.

Is there a trailer? Not yet. Scripts first, screams later.

Sleep tight, fiends. And whatever you do — stay out of Derry.
