James Gunn Promises Clayface Is a True Horror Movie — Not a Fake One

You remember. A washed-up actor with a face full of ego and a body full of clay, melting down on a Saturday morning cartoon while your cereal went soggy. Batman: The Animated Series taught a whole generation that Clayface wasn’t just a Batman villain — he was a tragedy with a melting face. Turns out one kid in that audience grew up to be Mike Flanagan. And he never let go of the clay.
Turn off the lights, fiends. This one comes straight from the studio’s top office — and it’s about as close to a blood oath as Hollywood gets.

Gunn Swears It’s the Real Thing
In a new interview published today, DC Studios co-chief James Gunn laid it out plainly: Clayface is meant to be a true horror film — the kind of picture he grew up loving in the Carpenter and Cronenberg tradition, only set inside the DCU. “Not a fake horror movie,” as he put it. A studio head voluntarily saying the words “true horror film” about a comic-book movie, out loud, in 2026? Horror hounds, that earns attention.
The wildest part: nobody at DC ever asked for a Clayface movie. Flanagan — horror’s golden boy, between his Carrie series on Prime and whatever Stephen King has cooking — walked into Gunn’s office with a Clayface story he’d been carrying around for years. Gunn says the pitch impressed them enough to commission the screenplay, and the script came back even better than the pitch.
And here’s the detail that should melt every ’90s kid’s heart: Flanagan didn’t pull his Clayface from the comics. He pulled it from the cartoon. Gunn says the pitch grew out of Flanagan’s love for the animated series’ Clayface storyline — the two-part “Feat of Clay” saga that turned a ham actor into a tragic monster. (Which, let’s be honest, is the definitive Clayface.)
Gunn also folded this into his bigger DC thesis: every project gets its own tone. Creature Commandos isn’t Superman, Superman isn’t Clayface. No house style, no formula — just great screenplays, made with full commitment. “If a screenplay is great, we’re going to find a way to make that movie,” is the gist.
Oh, and Gunn — the Slither and Belko Experiment guy — had one more gift for us: he says horror fans are “probably the nicest fans in the world,” and that horror sets run on gallows humor between takes. Which tracks. You don’t survive a clay-melting practical-effects day without laughing.
The Verdict
Full disclosure, up front, because that’s how we do things here: Clayface doesn’t hit theaters until October 23, so the only people who’ve seen the finished thing are Warner’s inner circle and the first-reaction crowd. No skulls yet — but consider this, fiends: we already covered the first reactions, and the word was “extremely gory” and “very good.” Now the studio’s co-chief is out here promising real horror. The clay is about to melt.
