Keanu Reeves

Keanu Reeves (born 1964) is the Beirut-born, Toronto-raised actor who played John Constantine in Constantine (2005), Neo in The Matrix and John Wick.

The comic-book John Constantine is blond, from Liverpool, and lives in a tan trenchcoat. Keanu Reeves played him dark-haired, in a black suit, in his own North American voice, and the director says they never even discussed doing it the other way. The reviews in 2005 were mixed. Two decades of cult reappraisal later, his is the Constantine the screen remembers.

Who He Is

Keanu Charles Reeves was born on September 2, 1964, in Beirut, Lebanon. The name Keanu is Hawaiian for “cool breeze over the mountains.” His father, Samuel Nowlin Reeves Jr., was an American-born geologist; The Canadian Encyclopedia gives his descent as Indigenous Hawaiian, Chinese, British and Portuguese, and other accounts add Irish or English strands. His mother, Patricia Taylor, was English-born, a costume designer and a former showgirl.

His parents separated when he was three. His mother took him and his younger sister, Kim, first to Sydney, then to New York City, then to Toronto, where they arrived when he was five and where he was mainly raised. He became a naturalized Canadian citizen. There were three stepfathers, in order: the stage and film director Paul Aaron, the rock promoter Robert Miller and the salon owner Jack Bond.

He went to four Toronto schools, including the Etobicoke School of the Arts, which expelled him. He has dyslexia. On the ice he was a goalie good enough to earn the nickname “The Wall.” He left high school without a diploma.

In the late 1990s his partner was Jennifer Syme. Their daughter, Ava Archer Syme-Reeves, was stillborn in December 1999, and Syme died in a car accident in April 2001.

His sister Kim was diagnosed with leukemia in 1991. He was one of her main supports through a decade-long fight, and she went into remission in 2001. His charity work is real and deliberately unbranded. “I have a private foundation that’s been running for five or six years, and it helps aid a couple of children’s hospitals and cancer research,” he told Ladies’ Home Journal in 2009. “I don’t like to attach my name to it. I just let the foundation do what it does.” He took part in the 2008 Stand Up To Cancer telethon and, in 2020, auctioned a Zoom date for Camp Rainbow Gold.

His partner is the visual artist Alexandra Grant. They met at a dinner party in 2009, made two books together, Ode to Happiness (2011, his text and her illustrations) and Shadows (2016, his text and her photographs), and founded the publisher X Artists’ Books in 2017. They went public as a couple at the LACMA Art + Film Gala in November 2019. They are not married; Grant publicly shot down a marriage rumour in September 2025.

The Work, and What He Did in It

From Toronto to River’s Edge

His screen start was Canadian television, with Hangin’ In (1984) the standard first credit, then the films Youngblood (1986) and Flying (1986). River’s Edge (1986) was his critical breakout. The Night Before and Dangerous Liaisons followed in 1988, then two that fixed his early image: Ted Logan in Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure (1989) and Parenthood (1989).

Point Break (1991) made him Johnny Utah, the undercover FBI agent among surfing bank robbers, and took about $83.5 million worldwide. In My Own Private Idaho (1991) he was Scott Favor, opposite River Phoenix. Four of his films came out in 1991.

Bram Stoker’s Dracula (1992)

That pace is how he arrived at Francis Ford Coppola‘s Bram Stoker’s Dracula: on his own account, exhausted and burnt out from back-to-back productions. He plays Jonathan Harker opposite Gary Oldman‘s Count and Winona Ryder‘s Mina. The film cost $40 million and took about $215.9 million worldwide.

The notices were unkind about his English accent. Adam Mars-Jones, in The Independent, called the performance “plain bad.” Coppola has defended him ever since. “We knew that it was tough for him to affect an English accent. He tried so hard,” he told Entertainment Weekly in 2015. “That was the problem, actually — he wanted to do it perfectly and in trying to do it perfectly it came off as stilted. I tried to get him to just relax with it and not do it so fastidiously. So maybe I wasn’t as critical of him, but that’s because I like him personally so much. To this day, he’s a prince in my eyes.”

Speed and the Devil (1993 to 1997)

He was Don John in Much Ado About Nothing (1993) and Siddhartha in Little Buddha (1993). Then Speed (1994) made him an action lead as Jack Traven, and took about $350.4 million worldwide. A Walk in the Clouds, Johnny Mnemonic and Chain Reaction filled 1995 and 1996.

He turned down Speed 2, despite a reported $11 million offer, to make The Devil’s Advocate (1997). He plays Kevin Lomax, the Florida lawyer recruited by Al Pacino’s John Milton. According to the Wall Street Journal in 2001, Reeves gave up “a couple million dollars” of his fee so the production could afford Pacino. The Journal reported that he did the same thing for Gene Hackman on The Replacements (2000). The Devil’s Advocate took about $152.9 million worldwide.

The Matrix (1999)

Will Smith was offered Neo first and passed, choosing Wild Wild West; in a 2019 video he said the pitch had baffled him and that Reeves was the right choice. The Wachowskis’ The Matrix opened on March 31, 1999, and Reeves, then 34, had trained for about four months with Yuen Woo-ping in martial arts and wire work before the cameras rolled. The film won four Academy Awards, for visual effects, film editing, sound and sound effects editing, and took about $473.3 million worldwide.

Both sequels came out in 2003. The Matrix Reloaded took about $741.8 million worldwide, the peak of the franchise, and The Matrix Revolutions about $427.3 million.

The money story that follows him around is mostly false. The viral claim that he gave 70 percent of his Matrix salary to leukemia research has no reliable evidence behind it, and his publicist denied it. The documented version is narrower: the Wall Street Journal reported in 2001 that he signed over part of his back-end deal on the sequels to the special-effects and costume-design departments. “He felt that they were the ones who made the movie and that they should participate,” the paper reported. The amount was never disclosed.

The Watcher and The Gift (2000)

The Watcher casts him against type as the serial killer David Allen Griffin, and, on his own account, against his will. “I never found the script interesting, but a friend of mine forged my signature on the agreement,” he said in a 2001 interview. “I couldn’t prove he did and I didn’t want to get sued, so I had no other choice but to do the film.” He had agreed to what began as a small favour role that then grew, and he refused to do press for the film, with an agreement that he could speak openly a year later. It was poorly reviewed and brought him a Razzie nomination for Worst Supporting Actor.

The same year, Sam Raimi‘s Southern Gothic thriller The Gift gave him one of his darkest roles: Donnie Barksdale, the abusive husband of Hilary Swank’s Valerie, opposite Cate Blanchett’s Annie Wilson. CNN’s Paul Clinton credited Raimi with drawing a real performance out of him. The Gift took about $44.6 million worldwide.

Sweet November (2001) and Something’s Gotta Give (2003) kept the romantic side of the career going between the Matrix films.

Constantine (2005)

Francis Lawrence’s Constantine opened on February 18, 2005, with Reeves as John Constantine, Rachel Weisz as Angela Dodson, Shia LaBeouf as Chas Kramer, Tilda Swinton as Gabriel, Djimon Hounsou as Papa Midnite and Peter Stormare as Lucifer. It draws mainly on Garth Ennis’s “Dangerous Habits” arc and on Original Sins. The title was changed from Hellblazer partly to avoid confusion with Hellraiser. Alan Moore, a co-creator of the character, refused any credit or association and had his royalties redistributed.

The Constantine of the comics first appeared in Swamp Thing #37 in 1985, went on to headline Hellblazer, and was drawn as a blond, Liverpool-born working-class occult detective modelled on Sting. The film moved him to Los Angeles, darkened his hair and put him in a black suit, and Reeves played him in his own accent. Asked years later at a Comic-Con@Home reunion about the hair and the British accent, Lawrence said: “We never talked about it. We wanted to do what was right for what we were doing.”

Reception at the time was mixed, with Rotten Tomatoes reported at 46 percent from critics and 72 percent from audiences. It took about $230.9 million worldwide on a reported budget of around $100 million. What followed is the documented arc of a cult reappraisal across two decades, to the point where the film is now the reference version of the character on screen. The producer Michael Uslan has promoted a one-night Regal re-release on October 26, 2026.

A sequel exists only in development. Constantine 2 was announced in September 2022, with Reeves returning, Lawrence directing and Akiva Goldsman writing and producing with Bad Robot. In early 2025 Reeves told Inverse: “We pitched a story to DC Studios, and they said, ‘Okay.’ So we’re going to try and write a script. John Constantine’s going to be tortured even more.” In October 2025 he told Rotten Tomatoes they had received another version of the script and were waiting to present it to the studio, and James Gunn said that month he had discussed it with Reeves but had not read a script. Deadline reported in October 2026 that it remains in development at Warner Bros. There is no greenlight, no start date and no release date.

Between the Franchises (2005 to 2013)

Thumbsucker (2005), A Scanner Darkly (2006), The Lake House (2006, reuniting him with Sandra Bullock) and Street Kings (2008) came next. He was Klaatu in The Day the Earth Stood Still (2008), which took about $233.1 million worldwide. After Henry’s Crime (2010), he made his debut as a director with Man of Tai Chi (2013), in which he also plays the villain. 47 Ronin (2013) took about $151.8 million worldwide.

John Wick (2014)

The film that defined the second half of his career began as a script by Derek Kolstad called Scorn. Chad Stahelski directed it, with David Leitch as an uncredited co-director, and Stahelski had been Reeves’s stunt double on the Matrix films. Reeves is John Wick, a retired hitman who comes back for the men who killed Daisy, the puppy his late wife, Helen, left him as a final gift. It cost $20 million to $30 million and took about $86.1 million worldwide, and it was hailed on release as his comeback.

Knock Knock (2015)

Eli Roth‘s Knock Knock, co-written by Roth, Nicolás López and Guillermo Amoedo, premiered in Sundance’s Midnight section on January 23, 2015, and opened in the US on October 9, 2015. Reeves plays Evan Webber, a married architect home alone for the weekend when two stranded women, Genesis (Lorenza Izzo) and Bel (Ana de Armas), knock at his door. It had a limited US release, about $36,000 domestically, and took about $5.6 million worldwide.

Wick and Everything Else (2017 to 2023)

John Wick: Chapter 2 (2017) took about $174.3 million worldwide and John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum (2019) about $328.3 million. In 2019 he also voiced Duke Caboom in Toy Story 4 and turned up in Always Be My Maybe as an exaggerated version of himself, a slow-motion entrance that became its own meme. In the game Cyberpunk 2077 (2020) he is Johnny Silverhand, in voice and likeness, and he came back for the Phantom Liberty expansion in 2023.

Bill & Ted Face the Music (2020) brought back Ted Logan 29 years on, released on August 28, 2020, in limited theatres and on premium video on demand on the same day, so its theatrical figure of about $6.3 million measures only part of the audience. The Matrix Resurrections (2021) opened in US theatres and on HBO Max at once, met mixed reviews and took about $157.4 million worldwide, far below the original trilogy. He voiced Batman in DC League of Super-Pets (2022).

John Wick: Chapter 4 (2023) is the franchise high, at about $447.1 million worldwide. Most coverage leads with its Osaka and Paris set pieces: the traffic fight around the Arc de Triomphe and the fall down the 222 steps to Sacré-Cœur. It ends with Wick’s apparent death and a gravestone reading “Loving Husband.” An alternate ending showing him alive was tested.

Now (2024 to 2026)

He voiced Shadow in Sonic the Hedgehog 3, a casting first reported by The Hollywood Reporter on April 15, 2024, with the film out on December 20, 2024. Outcome, Jonah Hill’s film for Apple TV+, began shooting with Reeves on March 20, 2024.

In Len Wiseman’s Ballerina (2025), led by Ana de Armas as Eve Macarro and set during and after Chapter 3, John Wick appears in two main sequences: a brief staircase meeting with Eve that replays a Chapter 3 scene from her side, and a later sequence in which he is sent to stop her, fights her, then lets her go on and helps her. A closing phone call to the Director brings his time on screen to an estimated 10 to 15 minutes.

In Aziz Ansari’s Good Fortune, which premiered at TIFF on September 6, 2025, and opened in the US on October 17, 2025, he plays the angel Gabriel. It took about $26 million against a $30 million budget.

On September 28, 2025, at 61, he made his Broadway debut as Estragon in Waiting for Godot at the Hudson Theatre, opposite Alex Winter’s Vladimir, directed by Jamie Lloyd. Previews began on September 13, the production recouped its $7.5 million capitalization in eight weeks, and it closed on January 4, 2026.

John Wick 5 is in development, not production. Lionsgate confirmed at CinemaCon in April 2025 that a fifth film was being developed with Reeves and Stahelski. “Keanu, Chad, Basil and Erica would not return unless they had something truly phenomenal and fresh to say with these characters and this world,” said Lionsgate’s Adam Fogelson. In April 2026 Fogelson said they had landed on an exciting core idea but “there are a lot of steps, so I wouldn’t want to put a timeline on it.” How Wick could return after Chapter 4 is not public. Fake trailers with invented dates circulate; none is real.

His comic BRZRKR, created with the co-writer Matt Kindt and the artist Ron Garney, launched from BOOM! Studios in March 2021 and ran 12 issues. Netflix announced a live-action film, with Reeves starring and producing, and an anime series the same month. Mattson Tomlin is writing the film, Justin Lin signed to direct it in March 2025, and no production start has been announced.

Cool Verified Facts

  • He has never been nominated for an Oscar, a Golden Globe or a SAG Award.

Signatures, Habits and Behind the Scenes

In May 2010 the photographer Ron Asadorian caught him alone on a New York bench eating a sandwich, and Sad Keanu became one of the first actor memes. He explained it to Stephen Colbert in December 2021: “I’m just eating a sandwich, man. Okay, I was thinking. I had some stuff going on. I was hungry.” Ron Garney’s BRZRKR art echoes the moment, and Reeves confirmed the nod.

The generosity that gets attached to his name is real in the places it can be checked: the sequel back-end shared with the effects and costume crews, and the fee cuts for Pacino and Hackman, all reported by the Wall Street Journal. The foundation stays nameless by his choice.

The Wick era is also a story about a stunt double. Stahelski doubled him on the Matrix films, then directed him through four Wick films.

Why He Matters

For horror, Reeves is the leading man who keeps walking into the dark side of the genre on other people’s terms. He was Harker in Coppola’s Dracula, the lawyer in The Devil’s Advocate, a killer he says he never agreed to play, an abusive husband in Raimi’s Southern Gothic, the married man who opens the door in Eli Roth’s Knock Knock, and above all the screen’s John Constantine, a performance that broke with the comics on hair, accent, city and suit, and outlasted its reviews. Coppola’s line about him has lasted too: “To this day, he’s a prince in my eyes.”
